On 8th December 2004, my husband and I attended the Celebration of the Immaculate Conception at St Peter's Basilica, Rome. My ticket, which I still have, was number 09322.
There is a reference on the Time.com website about 8000 people having tickets for a service there in 1983.

The Basilica of St. John Lateran is the cathedral of the popes. There are six extant papal tombs inside the Archbasilica: Alexander III, Pope Sergius IV, Pope Clement XII, Pope Martin V, Pope Innocent III and Pope Leo XIII. A number of other popes were also buried there but these tombs were lost in two terrible fires in the 14th century.
Saint Peter's Basilica is only one of many buildings in the Vatican, albeit the largest.
