Mononucleosis usually isn't very serious, although the virus remains in your body for life. Most people have been exposed to the Epstein-Barr virus by the time they're 35 years old and have built up antibodies. They're immune and won't get mononucleosis again. Treatment mostly involves bed rest and getting adequate fluids. So it's hard to pinpoint the Death Rate from mononucleosis, since most people don't die when they find out about it. Furthermore, doctors estimate that each year 50 out of every 100000 Americans have mononucleosis. So you would have to imagine that if each one of them died, the death count would be low.

First off, dying of mono is very rare, I know several people who had mono they were sick for a week, then they were fine. About 1 in 2000 people die of mono each year, usually if they have a weak immune system.

According the the Centers for Disease Control, up to 95% of Americans have been exposed to the Epstein-Barr virus, the cause of mononucleosis, by age 40. Age at the time of exposure is the key. Teenagers exposed to the virus for the first time tend to develop recognizable infectious mono 35-50% of the time. Other age groups develop full-blown mono at very low rates. Everyone exposed to Epstein-Barr remains a carrier of the virus for life.

Because of the age-linked development characteristics, accurate statistics about mono are hard to come by. Children who develop mono often exhibit flu-like symptoms that are quite mild and indistinguishable from the symptoms of a number of other diseases. Adults also tend to write off mono symptoms as being signs of the flu or bronchitis or a common cold.

In summary, it is safe to say that literally millions of Americans contract infectious mononucleosis each year, but the figure may be as low as 2 million or as high as 20 million. In the absence of rigorous mandatory testing, which is not called for in this case, there is no way to narrow that range.
