The reign of Queen Mary (1553-58) was marked by religious upheaval and dissension. She had been raised as a Catholic, and she sought to undo the Protestant changes of the past several years. Protestants were suppressed and burned in the hundreds, an act which earned Mary the charming nickname "Bloody Mary". It is estimated that 800 people were forced into exile, and 300 refused to leave England and were executed publicly.

There is an urban legend about a ghostly Bloody Mary who, like all ghosts, has not killed anybody.

At least two according to the lists of martyrs...A young girl was burned at the stake with her parents, and a very pregnant woman was burned at the stake, her fetus was male (although I'm not sure how that was ascertained). There may have been others whose deaths were not recorded.

Why was Mary 1st called bloody Mary?

Many believe the drink was later dubbed a Bloody Mary after Queen Mary Tudor and her particularly bloody reign over England in the 16th century. However, a 1934 ad, noted by Esquire, states that entertainer George Jessel named the drink after a friend, Mary Geraghty. She was the first-ever Queen of England to rule in her own right, but to her critics, Mary I of England has long been known only as “Bloody Mary.” This unfortunate nickname was thanks to her persecution of Protestant heretics, whom she burned at the stake in the hundreds

How did bloody Mary get the name bloody Mary?

Due to Fantastic Mr Foxes book of Martyrs where he refers to her as Bloody Mary, She only had just under 300 protestants burned as heretics. The majority were exiled (800) for the 6 years she was on the throne. During that time they worked on the cult of Bloody Mary by ensuring that Protestant propaganda out weighed that of the Catholics 2:1!! She was also the daughter of King Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon. She took the throne when her parents divorced and after Henry split from the Catholic Church causing the devastating English Reformation. That is how she got her name.Mary did kill (not herself) but did send out her soldiers or something, she did send out people... to kill the protestants of England. Many as mentioned before about 800 protestants left England. Mary was hated for that, but was also given the name "Bloody Mary" for it. There is a legend that if you say Bloody Mary three times in the mirror with the lights off... Mary (Bloody Mary) will come and scratch you.

Did Mary I deserve the sobriquet Bloody Mary?

Many say Mary deserved the title as she burnt over 250 Protestants in her reign, many more than her sister Elizabeth (though she hung over 300 after the quashing of the Northern rebellion.) However if you compare it to modern day terrorists it is a small number. Martin McGuiness (main leader of the IRA) is known to have killed or ordered to kill over 3000 people and he is not called "Bloody Martin." though I suspect this is because he is know in Government. The answer is inconclusive and people are split as to whether Mary deserved her title.

This earned her the reputation of Bloody Mary.and that is why the legend goes on abot "Bloody Mary."

I know for a fact that Queen Mary has been unfairly named Bloody Mary because I do know that Elizabeth quarterd an innocent Catholic man.How many Catholics and Irsh people did Eliazbeth kill?

That someone else did something bad, does not disqualify the misdeeds of another. If you want to say killing people makes monarchs deserve the title 'the bloody', then the majority qualify. What made Mary seem so bloody was that she killed a lot of people in her short reign.

Did bloody Mary drown people in their own blood?

Mary 1 of England known as "Bloody Mary" did not drown people in their own blood. She never personally harmed anyone. She was not known as "Bloody Mary" in her own lifetime but was given the title many years after her death by Protestant writers angry at her persecution of Protestant traitors who were executed on her orders.
