According to the documentary "Stalin, Portrait of a Monster in Blood" he is estimated to have been responsible for possibly 60 million deaths.

There is a lot of doubt about the actual number of people that Stalin had killed. The figure given above is at the top end of the high estimates, which are usually in the range 40-60 million. The low estimates are usually around 5-20 million. Whether one regards the Ukrainian famine of 1932-33 as deliberately engineered by Stalin also affects the figure significantly. The difference between the high and low ranges is so great that it's unproductive and unsatisfactory simply to take the various estimates and average them.
Robert Conquest, an energetic anti-Communist, has revised his own estimate of the number of Stalin's victims from 30 million to 20 million.
