The National Vital Statistics Report estimated approximately 90,000 (6.5%) in-hospital deaths per year from a combination of hospital-acquired infection and medical error, contradicting other sources' estimates ranging anywhere from 44,000 - 98,000 deaths (method of analysis unknown).
The total number of patient discharges in 2007, excluding newborn infants, was approximately 34.4 million.
