No one really knows. No one knows how many people took part in the Crusades, no one knows how many set off to take part and died en route from some other causes, or who were part of the Crusades and died on their way home afterwards.

In short, there weren't very good records kept in those days. And for every 'official' crusader, ie the knights and nobles, who were shown on the church records as having sworn to uphold the crusades, there was a retinue of people who went with him: grooms, servants, etc. who were never listed anywhere.

Then there were the Children's Crusades, which simply happened. As the band of young idealists marched across Europe, other youngsters joined in, and there were no records of who was in the initial group that began the crusade, or in the final group that ended up stranded, away from home, and did whatever they could to stay alive.

The cusaders had around 60,000 men when the first went on the crusade. Many of the were killed and it was a death - live ratio of 3-1 so only about 20,00 survived of whom some deserted before they reached the holy land itself.
