100% of them. They live in the intestines of all of us. If the question is "how many people have been infected by pathological e. coli?", then the answer is in the millions - no accurate number would be possible to obtain, because so many of the infected die in poor third-world countries with nonexistent medical records.

E.coli is an organism that occurs naturally in the human gut, and it is harmless when in the gut. So every human being that has ever lived - that's billions - have e.coli. It is easy to get an e.coli infection and it has probably been happening since the beginning of time so it is difficult to give a figure of how many people are or have been infected with e.coli.

Anyone can get infected if they come into contact with e.coli outside the gut. For example, if a food handler passes faeces and does not wash their hands properly, the e.coli may be carried in the food that someone eats, and that person will become ill with an e.coli infection in the form of food poisoning.

If it gets into the urinary tract - and women are specially vulnerable to this - a bladder or kidney infection may occur.

If there is an abrasion on the skin that comes into contact with e.coli. it may result in a serious infection.
