That dark era in our history was strictly during the silent movies. That roughly 25 year span saw an unprecedented amount of falling pianos hitting sad faced guys in bowler hats.

Since the advent of the talking movies, there have been no more deaths. How this causal relation operated is still a mystery, but in 1952, Congress passed the Pianos In American Newsreels Omnibus bill prohibiting the depiction of falling pianos unless sound accompanied it.
