Literally tens of thousands, the exact figure is unknown.

At 6:53pm on November 9, 1989, Günther Schabowski announced during a press conference that all border crossings between East Germany and West Germany, including West Berlin were were to be opened with immediate effect and staff were to allow East Germans free passage into West Germany. Unfortunately, this information was not meant to have been released at this time as the necessary instructions had not been passed on to the border agencies and staff.

Following the press conference and according to official records, the first people to cross into West Germany were Annemarie Reffert and her daughter Juliane at 9:15pm, although eyewitnesses report that East Germans began passing control points into West Berlin as early as 8:30pm.

Pandemonium then threatened to ensue as tens of thousands of East Berliners approached other border crossings staffed with unsuspecting guards and it was feared that it could lead to bloodshed as guards fought to maintain order.

Finally at 11:30pm, Lieutenant Colonel Harald Jäger, in charge of the border checkpoint at Bornholmer Straße, having given up waiting for instructions to be issued, decided to dispense with formalities and issued instructions for the border guards stop checking passports and simply allow East Germans to pass through. At this border crossing alone, more than 20,000 people crossed from East Germany into West Berlin between 11:30pm and 0:15am (45 minutes).

Hundreds of attempts were made to escape over, through or under the wall. It is unknown how many of them were actually successful, particularly through the efforts of the underground movement that helped to facilitate escape. Many ended in failure, and often death. There were, in fact, 192 recorded deaths of people who were killed or died attempting to escape over or through the Berlin Wall between the day it went up, on 13 August 1961 and when the gates were opened for the first time, on 9 November 1989. Over 200 were injured by being shot by the guards.

What people influenced the Berlin Wall?

Too many people were leaving East Germany through West Berlin. from 1949 - 60 it was believed 3million people had left for the West. Eastern Europe was communist at the time so there were restrictions on travelling, soviet troops were lining every communist country. But as West Berlin was capitalist they had the freedom to travel and weren't linned with soviet troops so Eastern Europeans were travelling to East Germany to East Berlin and through West Berlin they could fly out to another country. Skilled workers were leaving East Germany which would decrease their economy but boost West Berlin's with flight money. Khrushchev (Head of Soviet union and East Germany at the time) was getting angry so built the wall to stop them. God Bless x
