Polio was one of the most dreaded childhood diseases of the 20th Century in the United States. There were usually about 13,000 to 20,000 cases of paralytic polio reported each year in the US before the introduction of Salk inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) in 1955. Polio peaked in 1952 when there were more than 21,000 reported cases. The number of cases of polio decreased dramatically following introduction of the vaccine and the development of a national vaccination program. In 1965, only 61 cases of paralytic polio were reported compared to 2,525 cases reported cases just five years earlier in 1960.

Uncountable. Given that his vaccine was developed in 1955, between his vaccine and the later Sabin vaccine (which began use in 1962), the global incidence of polio has dropped from 300,000+ per year to under 2,000 per year, with hope that a final eradication may occur sometime in the next decade or two.

Thus, is could possibly be said that Jonas Salk's vaccine has saved more than a 100 million people.

(one note on the wording: Salk and Sabin developed a vaccine to prevent polio. There is no cure for someone who has contracted polio.)

It isn't certain death to have polio. The only way you can die of polio is if it reaches your respiratory system and paralyzes your lungs.

Jonas Salk developed a vaccine for polio not a cure for polio. There is no cure for polio. Polio at the time was a very serious and feared disease.
