The people appreciate his teachings and his identification of the way out of suffering, but they do not worship him.
Buddhism change after the Buddha death- his followers developed many different interpretations of his teachings . Although Buddha forbidden people to worship him, some began to teach that he was a god.

Buddhists do not worship the Buddha, what we follow is the ideals and teachings put forth by Siddartha Gautama, who became a Buddha. Buddha is a title not a name, anyone can become a Buddha.
Siddhārtha Gautama is the Buddha who taught this religion to people.

Depending on your definition of worship, Buddhists either do not worship at all, or worship as often as they see fit. Unlike many religions, there is no specific requirement for this in the Buddha's teachings. In monasteries, generally the community recites teachings of the Buddha at least twice a day.
