It depends on which navy you mean. US Navy carriers routinely carried more planes because of they normally used deck parks, (keeping aircraft on deck while operating). British Navy ships kept all planes in the hangers until they were required for duty, which meant the size of the hangers dictated the number of planes carried. The Japanese Navy had similar methods to the British. It also depended on the size of the ship and the type of planes used.

USS Enterprise, (1938) 23,500 tons, 97 planes.

HMS Illustrious, (1938) 23,200 tons, 48 planes.

IJN Shokaku, (1941) 25,675 tons, 84 planes.

What is an aircraft carriers capacity?

WWII Fleet carriers could carry about 80 to 90 planes.

How many weapons could the US World War 2 aircraft carry?

It depends on the EXACT aircraft. Bigger aircraft (bombers, transporters) would probably carry more weapons than smaller aircraft (scout planes, fighters). Re-ask the question with the missing information.

Could the space shuttle land on an aircraft carrier?

The space shuttle would not be able to land on an Aircraft carrier. It needs a lot longer runway.

Was using aircraft carriers as aircraft freighters common in World War 2?

yes it was and when you think about it the reasons are obvious. An aircraft carrier is designed to transport airplanes so what else would you use? Of course you could load the planes on a freighter but you would probably have to partially disassemble them. Then when you got to your destination they would have to be unloaded, that requires cranes and other port equipment. By using a carrier the planes can be transported whole and then just flown off of the carrier and onto the landing field. During the war a specialised kind of carrier was developed for just this purpose. They were called jeep carriers. They generally did not conduct operational missions themselves. they operated behind the main fleets and carried replacement planes and pilots. that way, whenever a fleet carrier lost a plane, instead of having to put back into port for a replacement, one could be flown to it immediately. How many people can 11 aircraft carriers can hold?

Depends on the aircraft carrier. If you had 11 Nizim class ships the size of the Ronald Reagan you could theoretically hold 60,500 people. However if you removed the planes and added more food or crushed quarters that number could go up substantially. However Aircraft carriers can be as large as you want.

In the Doolittle raid on Tokyo why couldn't the American planes return to the USS Hornet?

The Doolittle Raid was conducted with B-25 land based bombers. Planes designed to operate off of carriers would not have been able to carry enough ordnance to make it worth doing, and the carrier would have had to come far too close to Japan. Thus they came up with the crazy idea of launching large land-based bombers from an aircraft carrier. Although the B-25 could, just barely, take off from the carrier deck, they were far too big to land on it again. Even if they could have, though, the Hornet could not loiter for hours waiting for them to get back. It was far too dangerous. Thus the plan was for the planes to drop their bombs, then proceed on to China.

Why were land bases considered better than aircraft carriers?

Because they can't be sunk. Aircraft carriers were expensive and took a long time to build. The aviators who flew from them required specialized training. They were vulnerable to submarines. Dozens of submarines could be built for the cost of a single carrier. The crew of a carrier was as many men as in twenty or more sub crews. Carriers required a dozen or more ships of other types to protect them from submarines and aircraft. Carriers only have room for a limited number of aircraft. And those aircraft have to be relatively small, so they can take off and land in the few hundred feet of carrier deck - an area shorter than a football field. Because these aircraft have to be relatively small, they are limited in the amount of fuel they can hold, and in the amount of bombs and ordnance they can carry to the target. A WWII carrier aircraft could range out about 250 miles from its ship and be able to return after making its attack. All WWII carrier aircraft had to be single engine, and the heaviest could carry about one ton of bombs. A land airfield could be as big as the island. On Saipan and Tinian in the Marianas huge airfield complexes were built, each home to dozens of heavy, four engine bombers, which could carry tons of bombs two thousand miles and return. Islands do not move. In darkness or bad weather they can be found. Finding a carrier the same conditions in a vast expanse of ocean was not easy in WWII.

Did the Japanese have a sub that could launch planes in world war II?

Why was the Battle of Midway importaint to the outcome of World War 2?

The Japanese lost 4 aircraft carriers and the pilots that were part of the crew. The USA lost one aircraft carrier. The USA could make up the lost carrier and crew. The Japanese could not.

How many B-47s does an aircraft carrier hold?

The B-47 is a long obsolete medium bomber that was land based - they were never used on aircraft carriers, and indeed, needed more runway than an aircraft carrier could provide. Hence, the question is moot.
