There are nine (9) players on defense in a Baseball game. It is not called a match. These players are also called fielders. A number is assigned to each position. In order they are, (1)Pitcher, (2)Catcher, (3)First Baseman, (4)Second Baseman, (5)Third Baseman, (6)Shortstop, (7)Left Fielder, (8)Center Fielder and finally (9)Right Fielder. Whether you play as an 8 year old in little league or as a major leaguer the rules are pretty much the same.
From September 1 to the end of the season, teams can carry up to 40 players.
Traditionally, there are nine players on the field... the batter is not included, because he is not a 'field' player/position. There are three outfielders, three basemen, a shortstop, a pitcher and a catcher... that equals 9.
22 players are allowed on the field for a play, 11 on offense, 11 on defense.
In baseball the only defensive player allowed to be in foul territory is the catcher. Otherwise it's a fielders balk.
