Four were assassinated and four more died of illnesses.
Assassinated were:
Abraham Lincoln (1865) - 16th President
James Garfield (1881) - 20th President
William McKinley (1901) - 25th President
John F. Kennedy (1963) - 35th President
Those who died in office were:
William Henry Harrison (1849) - 9th President
Zachary Taylor (1850) - 12th President
Warren G. Harding (1923) - 29th President
Franklin D. Roosevelt (1945) - 32nd President
There were four presidents that were assassinated while in office. They are Abraham Lincoln, James A. Garfield, William McKinley, and John F. Kennedy.
Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth because Lincoln freed the slaves in the South and Booth was pro-slavery. Booth grew up with slaves. His father also beat him as a child because his father had a major problem with drinking. He was also greatly exposed with southern culture and once said that his life, soul, and possessions were for the south. He always wanted to be a famous actor and thought that killing Lincoln would gain him popularity with southerners. He clearly had mental issues.
James Garfield was killed by Charles J. Guiteau. Guiteau had a mental illness. He gave some speeches in Garfield's favor during election time (even though they were boring and rambling). Guiteau thaought he was single handedly responsible for his victory. He asked for a job as an ambassador, and has refused by several people, and was once even told by the secratary of state that we has never to step foot in Washington, DC again. Since he had a mental illness, and could not handle this, he killed Garfield.
William McKinley was killed by an anarchist (a person who wanted to eliminate those in power). The person who killed him was poor and lost his job. He had a tough childhood and was constantly beaten by his father. He said the McKinley was for the management and not working people. This was during a time where labor laws and a hard economical time was in progress. He was upset by the way the gov't handles these situations, so he killed McKinley.
JFK was killed by Lee Harvey Oswald. He had a very bad childhood. His mother was married and divorced 3 times in 8 years. He had always had anger management problems. He ran into trouble with the law and was asigned a probation officer. He also went to have mental theropy. The theripist said he was a dangerous person and needed lots of help as soon as possible. He was ignored, and Oswald was never given help... Mabey because his mother needed help herself. Later in life he married and had a child. He constantly beat his wife for no reason. The assassination of JFK may have been avoided if he had received help when he was a child.
So parts of the killers childhood had a major part in them having mental problems, and therefore doing something as crazy and horrible as killing the president. These 4 assassinators clearly were crazy, and weather or not the president's views were right or not they paid the price because these four mental people did not get help.
