Mainframes are somewhat less popular now than they were at one time, but they still serve a useful purpose in some applications.

In fact, mainframes have now changed dramatically in size and form, and are not always in the big cabinet-sized boxes we used to associate with the term "mainframe". Indeed, many mainframes have been shrunk down to the size of a large PCI card, and are plugged into a variety of other systems, with special software which allows the mainframe applications to be run on the add-in card, in parallel with the "normal" OS.

Overall, mainframes are slowly becoming rarer, though are in no danger of disappearing anytime soon (possibly in the next 50 years, but don't count on it). A good estimate of the total number of mainframes (include the PCI card and other radically altered mainframe form-factors) is likely in the low 10s of thousands - meaning, probably no more than 20-30,000 worldwide, at best. Compare this to well over 1 billion PCs and PC servers currently in existence, and the 10-20 million other systems (mini-computers, various forms of non-PC microcomputers, etc.).

In true mainframe computers (those descended or based on the IBM 360 series), there is but a single central processing unit. However, a mainframe is not designed in the same way that a modern microprocessor-based system is, so it is not really possible to compare them directly. Mainframes are capable of processing certain workflows in a manner that makes them look like they would have multiple CPUs (in the microprocessor world), but in other ways, they can look like a single CPU.

Thus, the concept of "processor" in the mainframe world is significantly different than in the PC and workstation world, and what is represented by the processor is completely different.

Why you use many processors in a mainframe computers?

Mainframe computers are used for bigger and complex environment than mini computer, so many processors are used to increase the efficiency of data processing. It also provides another benifit i.e. a mainframe computer is able to continue to be in service with remaining processors in case one processor is failed.

What is the historical rate of demise of mainframe computers?

A mainframe computer is a large computer system that use to be manufactured. The historic demise of the mainframe computer began in the late 1980s when manufactures began making smaller models.

What is the purpose of network management?

Network management is a system that companies use to make sure all computers work together. I believe each computer is connected to one mainframe, so the network allows all the computers to use the same mainframe at the same time.

What are the four classification of computers?

MAINFRAME COMPUTERMINI-COMPUTERMICRO-COMPUTERSUPER-COMPUTERThere are many computers which are different from each other in various aspects. Classification of computers are given below.(1) Micro computers: These computers use a microprocessor chip and this chip is used instead of CPU means that this microprocessor chip works as a CPU.These computers are also called personal computers. Two major types of these computers are laptop or Desktop computers. Only one user uses these computers at time that's why they are also known as personal computers.(2) Mini Computers: These are powerful computer. These computers come into existence in 1960s at that time mainframe computer was very costly. Mini computers were available in cheap prices, so users start using it.(3) Mainframe Computer: It as a very powerful and large computer. You can get idea of its power as it can handle processing of many users at a time.Terminals are used to connect a user to this computer and users submit there task through mainframe. Terminal is a device which has keyboard and a screen. By using terminal users put inputs into the computer and get the output through screen.(4) Super Computers: As the name "super computer" specifies that these are most powerful computers even than mainframe. Actually, when we optimize a mainframe computer then we get super computer.(5) Microprocessor: You will find these computers everywhere. Microprocessor chips are used in many devices as I-pod, DVD, headphone etc.
