What is known is that the percentage of men of all classes who died in the disaster was far higher than the number of women, due to the "women and children first" policy followed by White Star as well as all other lines in 1912. The ultimate fact of the matter is that Titanic sank because she was speeding through a known ice area at night without a searchlight, the night was calm so there were no breakers around the base of the iceberg, the lookouts had no binoculars due to an unfortunate oversight common with new ships, and the berg itself was a "dark" berg, probably having recently turned over. The appalling loss of life (of 2,207 on board, only 712 survived) was due almost entirely to there not being enough boats for every passenger and member of the crew (although Titanic actually had more boats than were required under Board of Trade rules of the era) and many people never entered the boats because they had bought into the myth, never perpetuated by White Star, that Titanic was "unsinkable."

More crew died vs. third class passengers, but the amount of third class who died was almost even with the crew.
