How many same-sex couples have married in New York?

At least 8,091 same-sex couples married in New York State from July 24, 2011 to June 24, 2012, although the number is probably higher.
That estimate is calculated by adding together two statistics released by the government. First, about 3,037 same-sex couples married in New York State OUTSIDE of the City of New York from July 24, 2011 (the first day such marriages were permitted) and June 24, 2012 (the anniversary date of the passage of the new marriage law). In addition, 5,054 same-sex couples obtained a marriage license WITHIN the City of New York from July 24, 2011 to February 13, 2012.

Additional Breakdown:

At least 4,031 same-sex couples married in 2013 in New York State OUTSIDE of New York City.

At least 2,796 same-sex couples married in 2012 in New York State OUTSIDE of New York City.

In the first two days that same-sex couples could legally obtain marriage licenses (July 24-25, 2011), it is estimated that 1,200 such licenses were issued statewide. The Williams Institute on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Law and Public Policy at the University of California Los Angeles School of Law estimates that about 13,300 of the 65,300 New York State same-sex couples enumerated in the 2010 U.S. Census would choose to marry between July 24, 2011 and July 24, 2012.


From July 24, 2011 to February 13, 2012, an estimated 2,400 same-sex couples married in that portion of New York state outside of New York City, representing 7% of all marriages in that period. From July 24, 2011 to June 24, 2012, that number was 3,037 and same-sex marriages represented 6% of total marriages for that period outside of New York City.


July (24-31) 2011: 338 same-sex couples married in NYS (outside of NYC);
August 2011: 607 same-sex couples married in NYS (outside of NYC);
September 2011: 496 same-sex couples married in NYS (outside of NYC);
October 2011: 437 same-sex couples married in NYS (outside of NYC);
November 2011: 276 same-sex couples married in NYS (outside of NYC);
December 2011: 181 same-sex couples married in NYS (outside of NYC); and,

January 2012: 41 same-sex couples married in NYS (outside of NYC).
