As of 2014, there is no average or typical number of same-sex marriages in a given year, since the number of couple is increasing dramatically every year, due to expanding legalization. A typical year of same sex marriages won't be estimated with accuracy for at least a decade.

At least 131,081 same-sex couples have been legally married in the United States, although the number is probably larger due to gaps in the available data. This makes the United States the country with the most reported same-sex marriages in the world.

From March 9, 2010 to March 9, 2011, the first year when same-sex couples could legally obtain a same-sex marriage license in Washington, DC, 6,600 couples marriage licenses were issued in total. Although that figure does not distinguish between the same-sex marriages and traditional ones, one revealing fact is that in the same period one year before, only 3,100 licenses were issued. This means that, although in recent history the number of marriage licenses issued varied by 100 or less from year to year, the introduction of same-sex marriage in DC has more than doubled the number of marriage licenses issued.

Update:From March 9, 2011 to March 9, 2012, 5,700 marriage licenses were issued in total. Again, although that figure does not distinguish between the same-sex marriages and traditional ones.
