That depends on size of the song files. Longer songs will be larger files, and will take up more space on the player. Typically, a 40 GB player will hold up to 10,000 songs. Amazon has a wide variety of MP3 players, and the reviews are often helpful: http://www.Amazon.com/MP3-Players-Audio-Video/b?ie=UTF8&node=172630
just about 10,240 songs, but it does depend on how long your songs are, and if you have any thing else on your iPod, like videos, games, movies and so on. but it should still hold around 10,000 songs with all that too.
That's how many songs it should hold at a standard mp3 size. But using the 'preferences' option in the 'edit' window you can reduce the size by selecting 'custom'. You can then reduce the songs you import to as small as 16 kbps, but the quality may be too low for you. You can also convert imported files to WAV, AAC, AIFF, or Apple Lossless formats. I have a 40 GB, and it currently has over 17,330 songs on it, and they sound fine.
Would depend on the length and quaility of the songs being used, however, a ballpark figure would be around 10,000.
