Six. When The Three Stooges began making two reelers for Columbia in 1934, the Stooges were Moe Howard, Larry Fine, and Curly Howard. Curly suffered a stroke in 1946 and was replaced by his brother Shemp Howard. Shemp passed away from a heart attack in 1955 and was replaced by Joe Besser. When Columbia quit making two reelers in 1958, Joe Besser left the team and was replaced by Joe DiRita who played with Moe and Larry in several films in the 1960s.

Two. First was Joe Besser, who joined the Three Stooges after Shemp Howard passed away in 1955. Joe was with the Stooges for two years, 1956 & 1957. He left the Stooges when Columbia quit making two-reel comedies at the end of 1957 and went solo. The second Joe was Joe DeRita who joined the Stooges in 1958. He was called Curly Joe for his facial resemblance to Curly Howard. He played in the full length films the Stooges made in the 60s.

In films, the Stooges were commonly known by their first names: "Moe, Larry, and Curly" and "Moe, Larry, and Shemp," among other lineups. The film trio was originally composed of Moe Howard, brother Curly Howard and longtime friend Larry Fine. Curly was later replaced by brother Shemp Howard, when Curly suffered a debilitating stroke in 1946. After Shemp's death in 1955, he was replaced by comedian Joe Besser, after the use of stuntman Joe Palma to record several "Shemp" shorts after his death. Eventually Joe "Curly-Joe" DeRita (born Joseph Wardell) would replace him. Larry suffered a serious stroke in 1970, and was unable to continue performing. Emil Sitka, a longtime actor in Stooge comedies, was contracted to replace Larry, but no film was ever made with him in the role, although publicity photographs exist of him with his hair combed similarly to Larry's, posing with Moe and Curly-Joe (see below). However, Larry's paralyzing stroke in 1970 effectively marked the end of the act. He died in January 1975. Moe died of cancer a few months later.
