There is no limit on the number of times a person can be married. However, the person can not divorce a spouse to marry another unless an annulment is obtained. If the spouse dies, the person is free to marry again.

If a Catholic is married and then divorced in the law courts, then he or she cannot remarry in church unless the marriage is annulled. Annulment is a complex procedure of the Catholic Church and is based on the assumption that the first marriage was not a 'real' marriage and so never took place in the first place in the eyes of God. Annulment is rare, and not often granted, and extenuating circumstances (eg non-consummation of marriage, or 'proof' that the other partner never intended to keep their vows) are needed in order that an annulment is granted. However, a divorced Catholic can remarry in a civil service although the Catholic Church will not recognise this second marriage as valid, despite it being valid in law.

If, however, the Catholic is widowed, then he or she is free to remarry in a Catholic Church. In the wedding vows, each partner promises that they will remain married 'until death parts them' and so, in the case of a widowed partner, he or she will have kept their vows and are free to remarry in the Catholic Church.

Catholic AnswerYou may receive the Sacrament of Matrimony anytime that you are a Catholic in good standing and not currently married. If your spouse dies, you may remarry. If that one dies, you may marry again. You may continue that as long as you are alive and do not have a spouse that is alive.
