On average about 20 whales are killed every day, depending on the season.

Eleven countries hunt whales. Most (not Japan or Norway) only allow hunting by native populations. Here are the average numbers of whales killed each year:

  • Canada: 1 bowhead whale every two years from Hudson Bay. 1 bowhead whale every 13 years from Baffin Bay.
  • Faroe Islands: 950 pilot whales (actually a species of dolphin) a year.
  • Greenland: 175 whales a year.
  • Iceland: 30 minke whales and 9 fin whales a year.
  • Indonesia: Two small islands in Indonesia hunt whales with traditional harpoons thrown from small open boats. Between 10 and 20 whales a year.
  • Japan: The quota for 2009-2010 was 935 minke, 50 fin and 50 humpback whales, but the Japanese fishing fleet returned home with less than half their catch after opposition and disruption from anti-whaling ships. About 20,000 dolphins and small whales are killed each year by coastal fishers. in 2009 about 150 large whales were accidentally caught in fishing nets used for coastal fish.
  • Norway: The quota for 2011 was 1286 minke whales.
  • Russia: The native people in the Chukotka region kill 140 grey whales a year.
  • St Vincent the The Grenadines: 4 humpback whales a year using traditional boats and harpoons.
  • United States: Indigenous communities in Alaska kill 50 bowhead whales a year.

That's about 7400 whales a year, (not counting the coastal dolphins of Japan) or about 20 a day.

Due to the lack of resources available to monitor dolphin populations, numbers vary widely on the number of dolphins that die.

According to the Dolphin Institute, the International Dolphin Conservation Program (IDCP) wanted to decrease dolphin deaths to under 5000 per year by 2000. Prior to that, the Marine Mammal Protection Act desired the dolphin mortality rate be reduced to 20,500. It also reports that 1996 saw only 2,657 deaths.

In 1992, the National Marine Fisheries Service, operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), produced a reported entitled "Differences in Dolphin Mortality Rates in Night and Day Sets for the U.S. Eastern Tropical Pacific Tuna Purse Seine Fishery" which included an analysis of dolphin mortality rates due to purse-seine fishing (a method of fishing used at one time to fish for tuna). It reported that, in 1961, dolphin deaths due to purse-seine fishing was "as high as 550,000".

The NOAA in 2002 produced another report with a graph estimating the annual number of dolphin deaths from pre-1960 to 2000. The height of dolphin deaths due to purse-seining was about 700,000 around 1968, but by 2000 it had tapered off to well under 1,000.

However, purse-seining is not the only killer of dolphins and other sea life. Pollution is also seen to be a contributing factor, most prevalently oil spills. Dolphin mortality rates for all causes are nothing more than estimates based on observation and cannot be known for certain.

More information available about purse-seining, with links to other resources, is available in the related links below.

Over 1,500 whales are hunted every year. Commercial whaling has been banned since 1986. But whaling continues under false pretences now call "Scientific Research". This kills hundreds of whales every year. Even the fishing industry has caught nearly 1,000 whales in fishing nets killing 1,000 of them daily.

What is the cause of whaling?

The usual way the Japanese to kill a whale at sea is they wait for a whale to come up for air (Whales are mammals, so they can't breath underwater), then they harpoon it. The harpoon can sometimes have grenades inside the tips, so that it will explode inside the whale's body. The whale is then pulled close to the boat and shot several times with a rifle. The whale is then pulled up onto the boat, and cut into peices. Sometimes it is butchered alive. :(

How much whales get caught a day?

Not many... whales know how to stay clear of boats. In fact, they are quite difficult to hit when you are trying. This issue is not a reason why whales are endangered. The more serious issue is whaling.
