Grizzly bears formerly inhabited much of California, the reason the creature is on the state flag. Because of hunting and habitat loss, there are no grizzly bears left in California.

No grizzly bears have been spotted in Oregon since the late 1930's. The last one was killed in Wallowa County. Grizzly bears only live in zoos in Oregon these days
