There are community colleges that offer an associate in applied science as a physical therapy assistant. This would take approximately two years to complete as a full-time student. However, this type of degree is by in large a terminal degree. If you decide to transfer to another college or university almost none of the coursework will transfer. Thus, make very sure this is what you want to do. If you wish to continue your education in the future - for example - to become a physical therapist, or to obtain a bachelor's degree in any other area, then understand this might not be your best choice. That being said, if this is what you truly want to do and understand what I have stated in the above, then I can tell you it is a good field to be in especially if you enjoy helping people hands on, and the salary is not bad.

∙ 15y agoYou cannot be a physical therapist at the associates degree level. Colleges have now made it a minimum of a masters degree. However, in the near future it may become a doctorate. What you can become at the associates degree level is a physical therapist assistant.

I know of 3 types of PT jobs: A physical therapist (PT), a physical therapist assistant (PTA), and a physical therapy technician. To be a PT, you would need to graduate with a bachelor's from a university and then attend physical therapy school which ranges from 2-3 years. A PTA is an associates degree (I believe). Both require you to obtain a license to practice by passing a licensure exam. I am a physical therapy tech, and was trained on the job. There are a few full time physical therapy techs at the clinic I work at, but most of us are college students working part time to get experience before applying to physical therapy school.

Most colleges and universities are now dropping their Masters degree requirement for Physical Therapist. Most institutions are now making the Physical Therapist degree a Doctorate. Thus, if you are starting your 9th year (high school Freshman) you will need to complete four years of high school, four years of undergraduate work for your Bachelors, and three to four years for your Doctorate.
