The bachelors degree is designed to be a four year program of study if taken as prescribed by the institution. However, it depends on placement testing and the credit load a student carries. Thus, it may take a bit longer in some cases.

Bachelors Degrees in general are designed to be completed in four years provided the students takes the program as a full-time student. However, how long it takes to complete in reality is dependent on several issues.

  • Is student full-time or part- time?
  • If full-time, what is the credit load the student is carrying. Is the student enrolled each semester as prescribed, or carrying the minimum credit load for a full-time student?
  • Is the student required to enroll in remedial courses as a result of placement testing?
  • Is the student required to repeat any courses because of a low grade, or lack of appropriate assimilation of course content?

In addition, there are some degrees that may be designed to extend passed four years of study. As an example, Engineering/Architecture in most schools is a five year program at the Bachelors level.

How many years does it take to earn a master degree in computer science?

If you already have a bachelors degree in computer science, then you can complete a masters degree in one year (two semesters) of full time study. If you have a bachelors degree in some other field, you will probably need to take some number of additional undergraduate courses which will depend on your degree and the particular school. Someone with an undergraduate degree in engineering will obviously need fewer extra courses than if your degree is in English. If you lack an undergraduate degree, then add four years.
