Obama was elected to the US Senate in 2004. Prior to that he served in the Illinois Senate serving from 1997 to Nov 2004. And in 2008, he resigned as U.S. senator to run for president. Thus, he served about twelve years as a senator (state and federal) and then was elected president.

It depends on which job you are asking about. He was elected to the Illinois State Senate in 1996 (began serving in 1997), and then to the U.S. Senate in 2004. He ran for president in 2008 and won. And he has been serving as President since then. So, he served about twelve years as a senator (state and federal) and is finishing his first four-year term as president in 2012.

Barack Obama was elected president in November 2008, and began serving officially on January 20, 2009. So, he has served one full term and ran for re-election in 2012; since he won, he will serve four more years. Prior to that, he served one term as U.S. Senator from Illinois and served three terms as an Illinois state senator.

How many years has Barack Obama ruled?

Barack Obama is a president, not a king, so we do not say he has "ruled." Rather, we say he has been "in office." President Obama has been in office since he was elected: he won the election in November 2008 and was inaugurated in January 2009. American presidents serve a four year term, and then they can be re-elected for a second four-year term. Mr. Obama was re-elected in November 2012, so he will serve four more years in office.
