How many years of college do you have to go through and what classes should you take in high school to be a High school teacher? In: College Degrees |

Answer
It depends on what state you go to college in, as different states have different requirements, but--as a general rule--a high school teacher needs to have a major (such as English or math) and take education courses. Some states/colleges allow you to major in English education or math education; others will require you to take education courses after graduation.
All in all, most students will take 4-5 years from the start of college until they get through the education requirements of college.
In terms of the classes you should take in high school: any college-preparation track should be fine. Of course, if you know you want to be a math teacher, for example, you probably should be taking as many math classes as you can, as 1) you'll be better prepared for college-level math, 2) you'll get exposure to what it's like to be a math teacher in high school (and you'll be able to ask your math teachers about their jobs), and 3) you'll have math teachers who are able to write recommendation letters for you for college (and comment on your math abilities).
