Though Father's Day is not an official national holiday, it a a recognized holiday in the United States. President Richard Nixon issued a proclamation establishing the third Sunday in June as Father's Day in 1972. Congress had already recognized Father's Day in 1956 with a joint resolution.

In 1910 Sonora Smart Dodd organized the first father's day celebration for her own father's birthday. In 1966 Lyndon Johnson proclaimed the third Sunday of June as Father's Day. It took 56 years to happen.

Nine years passed between the first official Mother's Day in 1908 and the recognition of Father's Day in the United States. Mother's Day was celebrated in Europe long before this as a religious holiday.
