Non-religious people often don't make the effort to even understand the beliefs they don't subscribe to, so when something negative is reported in the press they treat it like a magical effect of that belief. "People who believe act bad because they believer" -- whereas other realize that good and bad are to be found everywhere. A person who does something wrong usually doesn't do it because they are White, a Democrat, or an Anglican. They do it for the same reasons anybody does something.
