Mineral oil is a byproduct of gasoline production and other petrolium based operations. It has a large number of internal, external, and cosmetic uses. What we know as baby oil is mineral oil. Baby oil can be used to aid in treating diaper rash. It can also be used to sooth dry skin. The amount used will vary with the application. Mineral oil can be used to remove some adhesives and to remove makeup.

Mineral oil is also used as a non-conductive liquid insulator. If you look on top of a power pole and see the large metal grey can-looking objects, they are Transformers. They contain coils of wire engulfed in mineral oil. The oil serves as an insulator and also a coolant. The mineral oil conducts heat away from the coils of the transformer and out to the metal shell.
