If Benadryl is being given to a dog to calm it I have asked my Veterinarian the same question. He told me give the dog 1 wait 30 minutes, give another, wait 30 minutes. Keep going like this till you have the desired effect, a dog will settle down or even go to sleep before yo can over dose them. To be sure, consult a professional before you blame me for any advice I was given and have tried. : )

It's never a good idea to give your pet a medicine that is not recommended by a vet. Giving (especially human) medicine to a dog without knowing the correct dosage can be harmful and at worse, fatal.
If you believe your dog needs treatment, take it to the vet.
Give 1mg of Benadryl per pound such that if your dog weighs 30 pounds, you should give it 30 mg of Benadryl. Administer the medicine three times in a day
Talk your veterinarian - while antihistamines are generally safe, there are the potential for side effects particularly if your dog has chronic organ failure (renal failure, liver failure, congestive heart failure, etc.). Also, your vet will talk you through how to figure out which formulation to buy (there are multiple different concentrations of Benadryl and at least two different types, liquid and pill form) and how to figure out how much to give your dog on what schedule. Your vet will also describe what side effects to look for that may indicate a serious reaction to the Benadryl.
It all depends on the size and weight of your dog. But usually a normal dose of benadryl or store brand version that you can buy at your local grocery store should work. My dog had hives and I didn't know what it was so I rushed him to the vet and they gave him a shot and told me to just give him a pill a day of benadryl and my dog is 9 months and 63 lbs.
You can give them 1mg of benadryl per pound your dog weighs three times per day.
Our vet said the rule is 1 mg of Benadryl per lb. of dog. So 25 mg pill for a 25 lb. dog, etc. Do not give liquid benadryl because it contains alcohol.
I have a 25 lb jackrussel he has anxiety and whines when we leave liquid or pill
