First, you have to realize that there are a large range of computers, with a very large range of requirements. Also, the amount of RAM will likely change rapidly in the future.

Most "el cheapos" off the shelf of Wal-Mart have between 512 MB and 1 GB of RAM. A typical desktop sold by, say, Dell or HP will have about 2 GB of RAM. Most computers on the market will support between 4 and 8 GB of RAM maximum.
