How much does a pet chinchilla cost?

It depends, i got mine from a rescue place and it cost $75, and i got free cage/toy/food/house and more. You can buy it at petstore and breeders which is atleast $100. But consider adopting it at a rescue place, 1 less abandoned pet!

I suggest getting a chinchilla from a breeder not a store because most chinchillas at pet stores can be sick and very unfriendly and you have no way of knowing how old it is. Also, getting a chinchilla from a breeder costs less, because they have more so the cost of the chinchilla if you are getting it from a breeder will be less then one from a pet store. Certain types of chinchillas also cost more then others. Decent chinchilla cages are also expensive A lot depends on the colour of the chinchilla and where you purchase it. The standard chinchilla is grey and these are often cheaper than mutation colour ways. In the UK prices vary from £20 to £200 from UK pet shops. Cheaper deals can be from from good local run businesses where the owner maybe able to introduce you to the small hobby breeder. Chinchillas from small hobby breeders may have been handled more than those from large breeding outfits but the breeder may lack detailed knowledge of the genetic lineage of his/her animals and so their maybe some genetic problems underlying such as fur biting, weepy eyes or dental problems. More expensive chinchillas come from large nation wide stores who hand select their breeders to their own criteria this depends on the selection criteria used by the store so ask them! Show breeders sometimes sell to the public these are the best possible animals to have genetically and from a health point of view. If you wish to breed your animals at some point going to a knowledgable show breeder is the only way to get the expert advice needed as regards the genetics of your animal.
