The books for the Kindle can cost anything from FREE to $9.99. The $9.99 books are usually for a new release book which, if you purchased in regular book form, would probably be hardback.

Almost always about 50% cheaper than the retail price.

Unfortunately, with new books it's not always that simple if you're from outside the US -- the paperback is often cheaper than the international Kindle version (but that doesn't include postage).
