Answer
It’s hard to believe, but 100 years ago bubble gum didn't exist. This fun and sometimes obnoxious “treat” was “successfully invented in 1928 by Philadelphia accountant Walter Diemer, who was working for the Fleer Gum Company. Keep in mind that there is a difference between chewing gum and bubble gum. However, most market research companies combined the two under the title “chewing gum.” In reality, chewing gum was invented much earlier than bubble gum. But there were several failed attempts at creating bubble gum prior to 1928. To answer your question specifically, according to several sources online the world market for gum is estimated to be 560,000 tons per year (bubble and chewing gum combined). Approximately 374 billion pieces of gum are sold every year worldwide, representing a whopping 187 billion hours of gum chewing, blowing and sticking to the bottom of desks. Given the number of kids in the world, these numbers seem a little low!
