Canada's most recent National pollutant Release Invntory (NPRI) indicates:
- The GHGs that have been estimated in the national inventory are carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), sulphur hexafluoride (SF6), perfluorocarbons (PFCs), and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs).
- Total GHG emissions in Canada in 2008 were 734 megatonnes (Mt) of carbon dioxide equivalent1 (CO2 eq)
- Approximately 81% the GHG equaivalents were generated from energy sources, (includes all energy production and consumption).
- The remaining 19% was largely generated by agricultural sources and industrial processes, with smaller contributions from waste and solvent and other product uses.
- CO2 is the largest contributor to Canada's GHG emissions, accounting for 78.2% of all emissions.
