This usually depends on each place that accepts checks. The usual amount where I live is a $50 charge on all returned checks, but some are higher. Most places have a sign posted though, stating how much the charge is for NSF checks, including banks since they sometimes honor (pay) the check to the business it was issued to.

You're only charged ONCE per overdraft, not daily. And most banks charge $35 per overdraft.
Amscot's fees are very reasonable. Usually $1 per hundred on Government checks.
You can have a box of checks printed anywhere. You do not have to use banks provider. As long as they have the routing/acct no etc they'll work, Wal Mart sells checks online too-good for any bank

A box of Walmart checks runs around 10 dollars a piece. Most boxes of checks are about 10 dollars from banks anyways, and they come with around 100 checks in the box.

Walmart charges 3% of personal or SSDI checks. They charge 1% of payroll checks. They only cash up to a certain amount, and each Walmart is different.
When using a cash checking service one can expect to pay a fee but it varies between banks. Some banks will charge $5 on a $1000 check and an extra 1% so the fee could be as much as $15. Smaller checks will have lower charges. Walmart has a charge of $3 on a check under $1000 and $6 for anything above.
Many banks will offer reduced or even eliminated fees for the initial set of checks on an account, and have just as much variety thereafter. It is best to be aware of your options when setting up your account to acquire the exact setup you need.
Artistic checks charges $14.95 for one box of personal checks with a basic design without duplicates or $18.95 for the addition of duplicates. It is a great deal because most bank ordered checks cost more.
One dollar. Of course. If it is current legal tender, they can't charge more than face value.
Any store has the right to refuse checks if they suspect there would be too much risk. Most stores do not take checks from out of town banks. I would suggest asking the manager at the Kmart if they will take your check. Remember, these days if the check bounces many stores charge a bounced check fee of about $35 each time it bounces too. So make sure there is money in the account to cover it, if they do say they will take it!
