A photographer's income is directly related to whether they are free-lancing, are self-employed professionals, or work for a steady rate in a commercial or industrial enterprise. Obviously, if they are free-lancing or self employed, the demand for their type of Photography and what the end user is willing to pay for their style, quality or popularity are major factors. Sometimes, the difficulty or danger in attaining the image has to be taken into consideration. Finally, the date you ask this question and the country you live in contribute to making this a question that has no clear answer, and all such questions will be merged into this one.

Finally, if one asks because they wish to know if photography is a profession worthy of their time, I say forget it. You will never be successful if you approach photography from an earnings standpoint because you have not the passion required to succeed. You have only demonstrated that in your mind, it's about the money, which will never be enough on those days the job is frustrating. Below are a few reasonable answers to the question.

The median expected salary for a typical Photographer in the United States is $47,442 a year.

Here is more personal input:

  • I'm a photographer in Canada and cleared $120K last year. Keep in mind, I took over existing clientele of 15 years from my parents. Photography depends on your skill, attitude and experience.
Photo paymentDepends on a lot of things....is it a commercial shoot, such as you are doing a spread for Toyota's catalog, or a shoot for a magazine, or is it a wedding you are covering, or is it for someone wanting their first head shots done? too many variables to answer accurately. CompetitionCompetition in the photography field is VERY stiff at all levels and is only going to get worse. You need strong business and marketing skills as well as artistic talent to succeed. If you want to break into the advertising or entertainment markets, you really need to be in a major market city (either New York or Los Angeles in the US)

an entry level salary is only about 15000 dollars

about 25,000 every two months.

a fashion mag photographer will make $250,000.oo per photoshoot

It varies greatly depending on the client.

A shoot for a small boutique advertising in the local paper might only pay a few hundred dollars, if that. A national advertising campaign for a high-end designer label can easily pay tens of thousands of dollars a day, if not more. Even at the local level, competition is very fierce, and it only gets worse as you move up the food chain.

Also keep in mind that usually the photographer is going to have to pay for the models, make-up artists, stylists, and all the other production costs out of the money he gets from the client.

Depends on the photographer, since you are not dealing with a salaried employee you get paid as much as you are worth.

Yeah,It's depend upon the photos,if your work really good then you can earn good sums of money. Yyou can sell your photos to some stock photography sites. According to the Job Occupational Handbook provided by the U.S. Department of Labor, the mean earning for a photographer in May 2006 was $26,170.

See link:

buddy it depends upon photographer's work, if your work is good then you can earn good money...

You can sell your photos to some stock photography sites like camerabux and earn good money.

Varies widely. in tjhe UK probably between £12,000 and £50,000 per year. Note that many photographers are freelance, so they are not paid a salary, but earn money from the photo images they sell.

The average yearly salary for a wildlife photographer is $15000 to $48000 per year.

highly experienced and extremely talented photographers can earn up to £100,000 a year but that is rare. Average is about £50,000 if you can offer something few others can. it is a competitve career.

I got hired September 12th 2008 and they offered me 8.50. the work is pretty chill and fun if you like kids and photography.

It all depends on the type of photography that they do. There are wedding, photojournalist, stock, portrait, etc. photographers.

Professional photographer's earning vary widely due the number variables. Freelance simply means self employed. If you are able to sell photos per shot as many freelance newspaper photographers do you may make as little as $25/shot in a small town. By contrast if you stalk celebrities and have connections within the tabloid industry you can make 10s of thousands to 100s of thousands for a set of shots. Commercial photographers include those photographers producing images for advertising agencies, businesses, catalogs, printers, and the like. Wedding & Portrait photographers work mostly for the general public. Editorial photographers work for mostly magazines and newspapers. These are all freelance positions unless they work on staff with a regular salary in which case many of them may be in a position where they do not own the photos they shoot for their employer, but also do not have to find new jobs, new clients and generally run a business. If a photographer works for him or herself they may have the added expenses of running a business including insurance, equipment, rent and advertising. Photographers with higher overhead tend to charge more out of necessity, but potentially may also have a higher income. There are several large and reputable trade associations for photographers. The APA, ASMP & PPA are a few of the most popular and best known. The APA represents photographers working principally in advertising. These photographers tend to be the best paid with annual billings in the millions and personal incomes in the high 6 figures. The ASMP represents the widest range of photographers having started as an association for Magazine photographers it now servers all types of commercial photographers. I think I saw a few years ago that the average income was around $100,000 per year with many making both more and less, some far less. The PPA represents Portrait & Wedding photographers. Those with retail studios and staff tend to make the most, but those who work out of their homes but book dozens of events and sittings a year can do quite well. I do agree that it depends on a lot of variables, if for example you want to sell your Photo's to Photo Stock Agencies it also depends on if you want to sell your Photo's to Macro Stock Agencies or to Micro Stock Agencies (or to both) and it depends on the approach you use towards your 'mix' of quality and quantity.
