An HVAC Technician can earn up to $35 per hour. That's not all. Of the trades, HVAC has the highest growth potential for salary. up to a 40% increase over the next three years. It is not uncommon for a well trained tech to earn 50 - 60,000 per year.

Look at it this way, baby boomers are retiring, not enough new blood is entering the job market. Everyone, everywhere will always need heating or cooling.

I know because this is what i do. I am an HVAC Instructor at a tech school. I love teaching the trade but i could earn more in the field. I was offered 70,000 for a refrigeration management position. I turned it down. I have my own side business, so i actually make much more than 70k.

Working for some of the bigger company's you can make upwards of 80000 easy and break into 6 figure range with ease. If you want to make big bucks working for someone else, you want to make sure they pay an hourly wage and overtime + spiffs + commissions. I'm under 30 and make around $85000 before taxes. If you want to get a job with the bigger companies make sure to get your EPA and N.A.T.E certifications. More importantly it's important to remember location is key. You will make more money in the south-east than you will in the south-west, know where maximum cooling hours (hours most machines run) are, 1600-1800hr areas will tend to have the best market for this trade. Most important if you don't know much about this trade, applied physics, and electrical/mechanical codes please don't consider this as a career option because your fellow techs will hate you for callbacks.

I am a 30-year old tech with 10 years experience in the trade and NATE certified. In Southern California, I make $27 hourly plus 5% commission on equipment sales and 40% commission an emergency after hour calls which generates me at little over 100k a year. The important thing to look for is the company, how long have they been in business, the longer the better, what's their standing rating with BBB, log into Angie's List and see what other consumers say about a certain HVAC company. Consumers will generally pay more if they know a company is well recommended, companies that have a higher price bracket for consumers usually will compensate the skilled tech more than a low balling small companies that underbid the competition. 5 years ago I use to work for a major air conditioning union company from local 250 paid at their union scale of $31.33 hourly, 8 hours a day only 5 days a week, no commission no overtime. After huge union dues, fees, and additional deductions I would only make a little over 50k a year which is ok if that's all you limit yourself to gain. With nonunion companies, you will make a little less hourly but a lot more from commissions, overtime, manufacturers spiffs and bonuses also if you are likable enough, tips and gifts from the customers themselves. I myself enjoy a $5000 ATV given to me as a gift from a customer of mine that could not be more happy because I sold and helped installed a high efficient complete system in their home which is saving them hundreds if not thousands of dollars on utilities.
