It is much safer to get a cartilage piercing with a needle. A piercing gun can cause scaring and lumps once the piercing has healed. These things are much less common if the piercing was done with a needle.
Can you shatter your cartilage when you get a new piercing?
Because the studs used in ear piercing guns are not nearly as sharp as a piercing needle the impact of these in ear cartilage can and usually does cause tiny "micro-cracks" to radiate out in all directions from the opening. This can cause an abnormal amount of swelling which can completely engulf the earring and then you have a real problem. It will usually also mean delayed healing or extended healing time, much more pain & discomfort for you, and in some cases the swelling never goes away. A piercing needle slides through the cartilage with little trauma making a perfectly round hole with no jagged edges or cracks. Having your cartilage piercing done with a needle will mean much less discomfort and faster healing time.
Do cartilage piercings hurt more than a tetanus shot or a finger prick?
Depends. I got my cartilage pierced with a gun and was like being stapled. The hole closed and I redid it myself with a piercing needle. The piercing needle was 20 guage and did not hurt as much. Hard to compare to finger pricks as the nerves feel differentally in both parts of the body. (When self piercing, one side bled a lot but did not hurt. The other side did not bleed but hurt a lot more. It wasnt so much the sticking the needle through the skin as it was pushing the needle through the cartilage, even using a foam backing to aid the procedure. Anyways, they both healed well.)
Is a cartilage piercing different than the tragus piercing?
YES it is ...I have an industrial and it is on the cartilage and my cousin have the tragus and she started crying and her pain tolerance is better then mine the tragus huet much more because it is more cartilage in it then on a cartilage piercing

A piercing needle doesn't poke its way through like either a sewing needle or a gun stud does, it creates an X shape, then the jewelry is easier to put in.It's also been sterilized in a machine called an autoclave that kills any germs on the needle, and it's kept in a sealed package until it's time to pierce someone with it. What is the difference between having a tragus piercing done with a straight needle and having it done with a curved one?
I've never heard of anyone using a curved needle for any kind of piercing. But, a straight needle would be much easier for a tragus. A lot of force has to be used to pierce the tragus and that would be difficult with a curved needle. Also, I could imagine that the curved needle would hit the cartilage/ear behind your tragus after it was pierced. Just get it done with a straight one.

Same as you would stretch any other piercing except much more slowly. Cartilage is difficult to stretch and may not stretch. It just varies from person to person.
Does nose or cartilage piercing hurt more?
just got my nose re-pierced yesterday, and i've had my cartilage done for about a year now. For me, the pain level is about the same. The piercing itself didn't actually hurt much at all for either, its just sore for a while after you get it done. I think my cartilage was worse, but not by that much. I don't think either piercing is that painful, but they do really look good. I just have a regular one hole cartilage piercing, but I hope I could help a little. :)
