There are many factors involved in pricing radio air time...which radio station is the right one to use based on audience profile and size, what time of day do you want the spot to air, and how often will you air it are the three major considerations.

Radio is a tool best used by multiple-location businesses or for branding of a product, service or show. A small Mom & Pop operation isn't usually served well by radio, as the cost is higher than the return. If radio is chosen as an appropriate advertising medium, frequency is key...airing the same commercial many times throughout the day and week will get the message across. One-time buys are not effective and should be avoided...if a business chooses to use radio, then it needs to be for at least 6 weeks in order to make any sort of impact at all. And you shouldn't just go buy air time on your favorite radio station...it's important to break out the Demographics, including age and spending habits, of the radio station audiences in order to see which audience most closely matches your targeted customers, and then buy air time on that station.

As with buying a used car, radio air time is highly negotiable. If you're in a small market with limited radio outlets, you may have less room to negotiate than if you're in a medium to large or major market, with many competing radio outlets. You could have a wide swing between the lowest-priced spots and the highest. If it's in the budget, use an agency to help place the buy...they typically charge 15% of what your ad budget is, but their assistance is priceless. If it's not in the budget, then interview salespeople from each station in your market and see what they have to offer you.
