Did your home button got broken? I would suggest jailbreaking your iPod (assuming its still kind of working if you fiddle with it) and than install "activator" then you will be able to control your iPod without touching the Home button or Sleep button.
If your ipod is broken you can try to click the home button and power button (at the same time) for about ten seconds or so. If then it still isn't turning on I would recommend bringing your ipod into an apple store where you can get professional help.
It's called the home button, and it is the only button on the screen of the ipod touch. It is circular with a white square. it takes you back to a home screen.
You could probably get at lease $100 if you put it on kijiji and give it some time
For an iphone click the home button and the lock button that is to reboot it if it doesnt reboot then it probably broken
To navigate without the home button, you will want to enable AssistiveTouch. This can be done by going to Settings > General > Accessibility, and scroll until you see AssistiveTouch. You will want to turn that on. Or you can replace the broken home button with a new one. Recommend you go to hcqs.com.cn for iPhone home button replacement.

Try clicking the home button
Press the home button and power button at the same time
