The pay scale is the same no matter what MOS (military occupational skill) you have. so if you are a ssgt or E-6 you will get paid the same as every other E-6 in the army. But, you may get more money in a rank if you are in a rank longer, example an E-6 with 3 years in the army wont get paid as much as an E-6 with 15 years in the army. ( it usually takes longer to get rank that fast and reach ssgt in 3 years but, not impossible). And you get additional pay for every skill identifier you have example airborne, Halo, air assault, Pathfinder, Scuba, ranger ect, ect, you will get more pay for more things you can do, then if you get hazardous duty pay, cola, BAH, ect, ect. and the army pays you more monthly for every language you speak, so green berets learn a additional language so if you are talented and can speak 3 languages fluently then three more things to get paid for(Spanish doesn't apply). So yes they can make a little more than the average soldier it can also work for a regular soldier it all depends on the individual and his capabilities.
well im no green beret but my jrotc teacher was, for 21 years. he said that the more specialized the skill the more pay. he said when he was in special forces he made about 5,000 a month. but he had a friend who was in delta force made 10,000 for every successful mission. those guys make the most when comes to soldiers on the field.
-----------
Special Forces soldiers are paid on the same pay scale that regular soldiers are paid on. SF soldiers also get bonuses for being on jump status and hostile fire pay and tax exemptions when on missions.....just like regular soldiers do. The only thing SF guys get above and beyond what I just mentioned are retention bonuses that can be pretty significant.
Operational Det Delta operators are still in the Army (they're a subcomponent of SF) and are paid on normal Army pay scale just like everyone else. They are not paid "by mission" like some kind of contracter. These guys don't do what they do for the money, because quite frankly, they'd make A LOT more selling their services to the highest bidder.
In terms of true dollars to train a SF soldier, I am sure it is classified. I know that a fully trained SF operator is worth over $1,000,000 to the army. His knowledge and skill-set are nearly as valuable as some of the armed forces' combat vehicles. Just as an example, a SF medic, once fully trained, has the ability to perform almost anything a civilian MD can. Also, he is a trained dentist and veterinarian. Remember, SF A and B teams operate deep in foreign territory with only local resources to rely upon. They are very self- sufficient as a team while, simultaneously, training foreign armies, engineers, doctors, etc. Having so much "invested" in training a SF soldier is part of the reason the army requires a 6 year enlistment post-graduation from SF school.
According to the latest statistics, the average earnings for green berets is $52,000. Pay can vary depending on professional experience.
