High school diploma or GED, and either attendance at a police academy, or a Basic Law Enforcement Training programme (usually administered at community colleges). If you intend to advance through the ranks, higher education is always desirable.

It depends where and what level. Local Police usually just require a high school diploma and then attendance at a police academy. Major cities local law enforcement such as Chicago, New York, etc will often require a bachelors degree. County and State police will most often require a bachelors as well.
