It's not that much faster -- maybe a little over twice as fast. DSL gives you 1,500 Mbps and cable can go as high as 8,000 Mbps.

First, 'b' is Bit, 'B' is Byte. There are 8 bits in a byte

In the case of the question (Megabits per seconds):

100.0 Mbps is equivalent to 12.5 MBps (Megabytes per second).

Dial up modems are (generally) capable of doing 0.056MBps (56Kbps) maximum,

100.0 Mbps (12500Kb/s) is ALOT faster!

It's fast...

We're talking 100,000,000 bits per second.

Here's the math -

1 Kbps is just a way of saying 1,000 bps

1 Mbps (Mega bit per second) is just an easy way to say 1,000 Kbps (Kilo bits per second).

So, 1 Mbps would be equal to 1,000 x 1,000 bps or 1,000,000 bits per second.

Taking it to the next step -

100 Mbps would be equal to 100 x 1,000,000 bits per second, or 100,000,000 (yes, one hundred million) bits per second.

Using a "File Transfer Time - Data Transfer Speed Calculator" we find the following transfer rates on a 100 Mbps network -

12 MB = 1 second

360MB = 30 seconds

716MB = 60 seconds (a full CD)

4.7 GB = 6 min. 44 seconds (a full DVD)

If you were transferring .doc files, each being 24kb in size, you could transfer 500 pages in 1 second.

Some additional info -

While a 100 Mbps network can send a maximum of 100,000,000 bits in one second, one should understand that this is only the theoretical maximum. There may be reasons why this rate of data transfer may not be realized in a real world situation. A slow modem, network congestion, having a 10 Mbps Network card, packet loss, quality of the line, etc. can all contribute to a less than optimum transfer rate.

Also, there are two things to be aware of when talking about data transfer rates -

1) Data transfer is measured in terms of 1,000 bits per second, and not 1,024 that is used when talking about storage devices.

2) Data transfer rates are noted terms of Mega bits per second, storage devices are rated in terms of Mega bytes of capacity.
