It depends on the activity level and other factors. The "eight glasses of water a day" recommendation that everyone needs at least eight glasses of water a day is a myth. Fluid intake (including the moisture content of food) should equal the amount of liquid lost during the day, from perspiration, expiration and urination.
During times of physical exertion or warm weather, people should take extra care in remaining hydrated. Elderly people sometimes have difficulty regulating their fluid consumption and should take additional care in making sure they remain hydrated during hot times, as they are also more frail and susceptible to heat stroke.
