My vet advises 1 mg for each pound of your dog's weight....much higher dose than for people. My rotty weighed 90 lbs, so it took some doing to get 90 mg of benadryl in him. I have a small dog now who has skin allergies and my vet recommends loratadine (generic for claritin) instead of benadryl....although the benadryl does help dogs to sleep. Also, if you give too much antihistamine, my vet told me that dogs can become hyperactive and antsy....so, the right dose is important. The loratadine has a different dosing schedule than benadryl...my 20 lb dog is only to take 2.5 mg of loratadine (claritin). So, he gets 1/4 of a 10 mg loratadine tablet. Hope this helps.
