Democracy does not promise freedom, nor does freedom promise democracy. They both tend to make the other much more likely, though.
Freedom - and I can only assume that by this, you mean life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness (or the original "property") and the inalienable attendant rights - is guarded bloodlessly only through democracy. It is most often attained at the barrel of a gun, but it can often be maintained with the vote (and defended with a well trained army).
So, I guess the real answer is that a person has as much freedom as they are willing to ensure.
Sparta because they did not have as much freedom as Athens.

No.
I wouldn't say that internet strengthens democracy so much as it is a sign of democracy. In free countries, the Internet is open whereas countries that do not have a democratic government, such as China and many muslim countries, the Internet is blocked or monitored. The reason for this is that the Internet symbolizes freedom - freedom of information, freedom to write and say what you want, freedom to talk to whomever you want...etc.
In a democracy, the rule of the people can only be maintained if the people have the freedom to politically participate.
we need a democracy so people have freedom of speech

No, democracy is a type of government (which is a noun) and "democratic" is a adjective that describes things having traits of a democracy. There is a difference between "democratic" as in referring to a "democracy" and "Democratic" as in referring to the US Democratic Party.
Freedom of press protects our democracy because it ensures the American people will be well informed of the issues.
