Fuel oils come in several grades of lightness and purity, ranging from gasoline and aviation fuel all the way to Bunker C oil, which is the thick black residual after all other products have been removed from crude.

Cruise ships burn the heavier grades or bunker oil, depending on whether they're in port or out at sea. (sulfur content and air pollution being the main considerations)

Bunker C oil is still used in some institutions such as hospital boilers, but it must be heated in order to pump it because of its high viscosity. Ships don't burn this, the heaviest residual after the crude has been cracked.

Although none of the cruise lines have converted yet, Princess Lines has placed the first order for CODLAG propulsion which is Combined Diesel, Electric and Gas fired machinery.

Presently, cruise ships use diesel engines and gas turbines to power the electric generators to produce the power to drive the *propulsion motors and to power the hotel side.

*Instead of a shaft driven propeller they use azimuth thrusters. They are electric motor- driven propellers which can be turned to steer the ship sideways, and they eliminate the need for a rudder. Cruise ships can dock without the use of harbor tugs (although the need for tugs isn't completely eliminated) because of the amazing versatility of these moveable electric motor-driven propeller pods.

Environmentalists have called for all new oil tankers to be equipped with bow thrusters (and double hulls) to minimize the possibility of a future event like the devastation of Prince William Sound, caused when The Exxon Valdez piled up on the shoals.

== Dollars and Cents== To put it in perspective, the fleet of U.S. flagged ships sailing interisland Hawaiian cruises (spending 96 hours of the week idle in port) run a price tag of nearly $250,000 a week to fuel each vessel, lifeboats and tender boats. These ships range from about 70,000 tons - 93.000 tons. Most cruise ships are at sea much more than this, and use more fuel from week to week. Much depends on itinerary, sea conditions, weight and other variables. It depends on how large the cruise ship is, what weight it carries (other than passengers) etc. It can be less than 80,000 gallons or more.

Most commercial ships (regardless of type) now use Bunker Grade Fuel Oil (sometimes called Bunker fuel, Bunker crude, or residual fuel oil) that has very long chain length. Bunker Grade Fuel Oil has a viscosity similar to liquid asphalt and is usually heated in its storage tanks by steam piping to prevent it from solidifying because of low ocean temperatures.

It depends on the size of the vessel, the size of the engines, and the length of time the ship is motoring at sea (as well as weather conditions).

The average cruise ship burns approximately 1 gallon of fuel to move just six inches.?

That is a question that cannot be answered exactly. Different cruise ships of different sizes use different amounts of fuel. I can tell you that there are some cruise ships that use no fuel. There are several large cruise ships that are powered by sails.

What fuel does a ship use?

It depends on the type of engines that the ship has, but most large cargo and container ships use heavy fuel oil called bunker fuel. In some cruise ships, they burn bunker fuel to spin electric generators that produce electricity for motors. Smaller vessels use various types of Diesel.

What type of fuel is used to run cruise ships?

Cruise ships run on diesel fuel to power generators while in port, and heavy fuel oil while sailing.

How much for a small cruise ship use in fuel?

The amount of fuel used by Cruise Ships will vary. It depends on their size. The Queen Victoria Cruise Ship can load upto 3000 tons of fuel. The 3000 tons are considered to be heavy fuel type. These ocean liners can also carry over 140 tons of gas oil. Typically the amount taken up will be 12 tons every 60 minutes. On average it uses up to 300 gallons to the mile. The burnout rate is between 50 to 100 tons every day depending on the model. . This applies to the typical cruise ship. Larger ships can carry much more. Hope this helps.

What kind of fuel do cruise ship use?

If the ship has a steam engine (very rare nowadays) it would likely use Bunker C. If it is a motor vessel (diesel engine), it would use either IFO (intermediate fuel oil) and/or MDO (marine diesel oil).
