This is almost certainly a bullion piece whose value is tied to the price of silver, currently about $13 per ounce.

As of 11-10-09 i troy oz of silver is $17.39

Assuming the coin is an American Silver Eagle 1 ounce bullion coin. The value is tied to the spot price of silver at the time of sale. As of 9-03-12 it's $32.10 per ounce. This price is a little less than you could buy it for and a little more than you could sell it for. But it gives you an idea of value. Collectors versions of this coin do have higher values.

NOTE: The spot price of silver and other precious metals changes by the minute when the market is open. So the value of this coin will go up and down.
